Understanding the Importance of God’s Law:
A Reflection from Sunday’s Sermon on Deuteronomy 4:1-9
In this post, I’m diving into a topic that's often overlooked in modern Christian discussions: the Old Testament Laws, as a vital part of God’s Word. There’s a profound connection between the logos (word) and the Torah (Law), as both represent God's revelation to us. All Scripture is meant for our benefit, not just select parts, and it’s essential that we recognize the value of every book, chapter, and verse. Let’s explore how God's Law reveals His goodness and how this goodness is reflected in our lives.
God’s Commandments: A Gateway to Life
In Deuteronomy 4:1-9, Moses urges the Israelites to heed God's commands, emphasizing their importance for living and thriving in the land God is giving them. As we read these verses, it's clear that God desires not just obedience but a relationship:
“Now, Israel, hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live..." (Deuteronomy 4:1).
Moses emphasizes that God’s commands are not arbitrary rules but are set in place for their well-being. This is the first key takeaway: following God's Law brings life and blessing.
The Quest for Understanding
As a parent, I often find myself on the receiving end of countless “why” questions from my young children. Recently, my two-year-old, inundated me with questions about the sun. He’s realized how much of his daily life is dictated by the sun’s whereabouts so he’s immensely curious about how it works. It’s easy to become exasperated by his questions, but that relentless inquiry points to a vital aspect of our human nature: the desire to understand.
In a similar way, the Israelites may have questioned why they needed to follow God’s specific commands. They received these laws amidst a surrounding landscape filled with different cultures and practices. Moses, knowing this, reinforced that these commands distinguished them as God’s chosen people.
This leads us to a profound reason we should abide by His commandments: they testify to God’s character.
The Law as a Reflection of God's Character
Verses 5-7 emphasize that adhering to God's decrees will show the nations their wisdom and understanding:
“Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding... What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him?” (Deuteronomy 4:6-7).
In the ancient world, the Israelites encountered pagan nations with their many gods. By obeying God’s laws, the Israelites would display a unique relationship with the one true God.
Today, as we live by these principles, we still reflect His character to a world in desperate need of hope and truth. Our actions can provide a glimpse of who God is to others, shaping their understanding of His goodness.
Promoting Human Flourishing
It’s essential to recognize how these laws, viewed through a modern lens, promote human flourishing. In a time where moral standards were often dictated by might or convenience, God's Law established a foundation of compassion and value for life.
For instance, in a time when inhumane practices were common, God’s decrees stood in stark contrast, highlighting the importance of human dignity and justice. As Moses points out, God's righteous laws were revolutionary, setting a standard for holistic living that benefits society as a whole.
An excellent example of God's Law promoting human flourishing can be found in Exodus 21:16, which states, “Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.” During ancient times, man-stealing was a common practice, but God made it clear that such actions were unacceptable. This command highlights the value of human life and sets a moral standard that protects individuals from exploitation. Unfortunately, nearly 600 years of American history have shown us the devastating impact of human trafficking on societies. If only this command had been more deeply heeded.
Similarly, in the New Testament, we find commands that further underscore God's desire for our well-being. Ephesians 5:25 encourages, “Husbands, love your wives…” while Ephesians 6:4 instructs fathers to “bring your children up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” These scriptures emphasize the importance of fathers being present and compassionate toward their families. Current studies continually support what God knew all along: families and communities thrive where fathers are present and actively engaged.
By following God’s Laws, we not only foster our own well-being but also contribute positively to the health of those around us. It’s through these commands that we establish a foundation for flourishing lives—both individually and communally.
The Role of the Law in Salvation
However, it’s crucial to clarify why we follow God’s Law: we don’t follow it to earn salvation. According to Romans 4:13, salvation doesn’t come through the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ. The Law is not our pathway to God; rather, it's a guide for those who are already in relationship with Him.
When we accept Christ, we receive His Spirit, empowering us to live according to His Word. Thus, fulfilling God’s commandments flows from a heart transformed by the grace of Jesus—not from a legalistic obligation.
Conclusion
In summation, God's Law reveals His goodness and serves as a framework for living in harmony with His creation. By following these decrees, we experience blessings, reflect God’s character, promote human flourishing, and ultimately point ourselves and others to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
So, why should we engage with the Old Testament Law? Because it reveals the nature of God, shapes us as His people, and compels us to share His goodness with the world. Let us strive not just to know His commands, but to live them out, showcasing the beauty of a life surrendered to Him.
